Abstract

Due to resource constraints, digital image transmission is a significant challenge to the Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) using image sensors. Wavelet based compression provides coefficient information with different importance levels for image reconstruction, which are desirable for multirate transmission over WSN with energy efficiency. In this paper, we propose a novel multirate image transmission approach, Image Component Multirate Transmission (ICMT), over WSN by applying different reliable levels of transmission adaptive to various components within the compressed image bit stream. Simulation results show that the proposed schemes achieve high energy efficiency in WSN while enhancing the image transmission quality considerably on noisy channels.
