Abrasive Electrodischarge Grinding (AEDG) of Silicon Nitride

Abstract

Although grinding is one of the most commonly used operation to shape ceramics many other processes are also being tried to achieve similar or better results. This paper reports results of machining silicon nitride (Si3N4) by a hybrid machining process called Abrasive Electrodischarge Grinding (AEDG). AEDG process combines electrodischarge machining (EDM) and grinding. The mutual assistance and compatibility of EDM and grinding and parametric relationships are studied using gap voltage signals, force measurements and scanning electron microphotographs. Substantial improvement in material removal and surface finish have been observed due to this combination.
