Abstract

The procedures and data packet as described are a useful, if not eventually necessary, step in the description and comparison of stratigraphic information. The descriptions of the bedding-plane configurations were devised in accordance with the character of the relatively thin but persistent upper Paleozoic cyclothemic strata of the midcontinent. The character of these cyclothemic bedding planes is an excellent reflection of the history and hydrographic conditions in the shallow Midcontinent seas. It is hoped this procedure will allow for rapid and accurate comparisons of stratigraphic sections in correlation and paleoecological studies. Plans are being laid to reproduce sections on an IBM 2250 data display terminal using the consistent data definition described herein.
