Abstract

The World Technology Evaluation Center (WTEC) has recently conducted an international assessment of research and development activity in micro-manufacturing, sponsored by the National Science Foundation, the Department of Energy, the Office of Naval Research, and the National Institute for Standards and Technology. The study focuses on the emerging global trend toward micromanufacturing and the emerging paradigm of the associated miniaturization of manufacturing equipment and systems for micro-scale components and products. The study investigates both the state-of-the-art as well as emerging technologies from scientific, technological, and commercialization perspectives across key industrial sectors including medical, electronics, aerospace, and consumer products. A panel of academicians, together with representatives from the sponsoring organizations, made visits to companies, government laboratories, and universities in Asia and Europe. The results of these visits are summarized in this paper with an eye toward assessing both relative progress and needed directions in micro-manufacturing R&D here in the US and abroad.
