Characterization of cardiopulmonary vagal afferents in the rhesus monkey

Young, adult rhesus monkeys, premedicated with ketamine (8 mg/kg) and anesthetized with pentobarbital sodium (30 mg/kg) were prepared in order to study the discharge characteristics of cardiopulmonary receptors whose fibers traverse the cervical vagus. The discharge characteristics were correlated with the ECG, aortic, and right or left atrial pressures, and respiration in open chest preparations. Central venous pressure was used as an index of atrial pressure in closed chest preparations. The majority of the fibers studied originated in pulmonary stretch receptors whose activity increased during inspiration. Several aortic baroreceptors were observed; however, few ventricular receptors were isolated. A number of receptors showed type B atrial activity. The activity of the type B atrial receptors increased during intravascular volume expansion and decreased during hemorrhage. They were also very sensitive to intravenous veratridine. These studies demonstrate the presence of responsive type B atrial receptors in the subhuman primate.
