Abstract

A new virus which is lytic for the unicellular blue-green algal strains Synechococcus elongatus IU 563 and Microcystis aeruginosa NRC-1 has been isolated from a fresh water lake in the vicinity of Lincoln, Nebraska. The virus (designated as cyanophage SM-2) has a polyhedral head with an edge-to-edge diameter of 50-55 nm, and a narrow, noncontractile, flexible tail which is 130-140 nm in length.
