title = "Developmental screening in rural primary care: Real-world application",

note = "Funding Information: This study was conducted in 2 practices, both rural in nature. The behavior of 7 pediatricians was examined and data were obtained from medical records as opposed to direct observation of doctor–patient interactions. Data collected may not have accurately captured the content of sessions and suggestions for referrals may have been made that were not noted. Actual observational data collection of patients interacting with their pediatrician would provide a better picture of physician use of screening information. A larger scale examination of the usefulness of developmental screening tools in multiple settings (urban, suburban, and rural) may also provide information to add to current findings. Finally, there is a need to further evaluate what factors will produce an impact on physician referrals for assessment and/or treatment of delays that are suspected due to screening results. Perhaps greater information on the availability and effectiveness of early childhood intervention and educational programs in the community would influence referral rates.
