Abstract

We report the occurrence of symptomatic diffuse oesophageal spasm as the first manifestation of a peripheral axonal neuropathy in a patient with a metastatic non-functioning glucagonoma. In this instance, the motility disorder appeared to result from an axonal neuropathy of the vagus nerve. The various mechanisms whereby dysphagia may occur in patients with malignant disease are reviewed.
