Abstract

The assessment of the communication effectiveness of individuals who use augmentative and alternative communication techniques remains an important clinical and research activity. However, the tendency to use the performance of nondisabled speakers as the standard against which to compare the performance of persons using augmentative and alternative communication techniques must be evaluated carefully to assure that the resulting conclusions are accurate and sensitive to the purpose of the communicative behaviors under investigation.
