Abstract

This discussion of Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) includes a nomogram relatinga metal removal rate, roughness, and relative electrode wear to current and pulse duration as a means of suitable operating condtiions. The material removal mechanism in EDM is identified as being associated with bulk boiling inside the overheated volume at the end of a pulse. Surface roughness is a function of pulse duration, peak current work and electrode material and polarity.
