Harmonic generation from solid-density plasmas produced by subpicosecond high contrast laser pulses

Abstract

Laser intensities of up to 1018 W/cm2 and pulse-to-pulse contrasts better than 1010 was used to investigate the effect of prepulse and plasma gradient on higher-harmonic generation efficiency. A frequency-doubled laser pulse from the CUOST CPA laser was focused by a parabolic mirror onto several flat targets of various atomic-numbers at an incident angle of 60°. A 1-m VUV spectrometer equipped with a 1200 lines/mm grating was used to measure the specular harmonics. Maximum harmonic signal occurred when the incident laser was p-polarized, no harmonic signal was observed with s-polarized laser pulses. It was found that the harmonics were distributed well within the laser cone angle along the specular direction.
