N2 - Proposed strategy for comprehensive hepatic imaging. A large number of comparative studies concerning the preoperative imaging of focal liver lesions have been published. Many studies have various limitations. Nevertheless, a number of conclusions can be drawn: MR imaging has a larger area under the ROC curve than US, CT, and CTAP. MR imaging has a higher sensitivity and specificity than US, CT, CTAP, or PET. The findings from the literature suggest that the state-of-the-art MR imaging of the liver should play a pivotal role as a comprehensive approach for the work-up of patients with suspected or known liver abnormalities (Fig. 17). Modern CT is the most comparable modality to MR imaging in its overall diagnostic accuracy, but a use of MR imaging will be the increasing concern of the risks of cancer induction by excessive use of CT.
