Abstract

There exists significant opportunity to improve surgical care. Protocols and programs have evolved that streamline perioperative care, reducing complications and costs. No single element of such programs has demonstrated singular ability to improve care. Rather, the collective effect of these multimodal approaches highlight that such improvements are within grasp for all health care systems. This review details the evolution of perioperative care programs and then outlines the essential steps to building such programs locally.
