Instrumental measurement of the levelness of textile coloration

Abstract

An objective method for evaluating the levelness of textile coloration is reported. Using a spectrophotometer, the levelness parameter can be derived from the sample standard deviation of K/S values in different places of the fabric with consideration for the photopic spectral luminous efficiency function. The levelness parameter (L) classifies the colored textiles into different levelness grades. For most samples tested, the L value is in the range of 1 to 5. The larger the L value, the more level the color. This rating corresponds to visual evaluation and is very similar to the five grade ratings for many of the textile test methods. The levelness parameter is not only important to textiles which require high color levelness, but also to the products which are intentionally designed for uneven coloration effects such as stonewashed denim.
