Abstract
This paper describes an intelligent CAD system for industrial piping design. The system is based on use of a symbolic representation scheme for the piping structure. This representation scheme permits fast interactive design in isometric projection and facilitates a variety of analysis operations on the design. The scheme makes use of a knowledge-based piping run generator which applies a generate-and-test method with a look-forward and look-backward strategy to search for an optimal solution to the piping design. The system makes it possible to design complex piping systems in a short time and with modest storage requirements.
