Interactions and switching behavior of anisotropic magnetic dots

Abstract

The interactions and switching behavior of three magnetic nanodots with various aspect ratios were investigated. Focused ion beam milling was used to mill the dots, each with different shape anisotropy. It was found that each of the three dots in the system had a unique switching field, and there was a significant magnetostatic coupling. Using micromagnetic simulations it was suggested that for strong interdot interaction existed for dot separations of less than 50nm, which led to the possibility of controlled switching of neighbouring dots. The role of the switching behavior in magnetic information processing was also investigated.
