Abstract

Metal/ceramic bonding is used for a wide range of applications - from electronic packaging to biomedical implants - and this may develop into an application area for lasers. The laser bonding of sputter-deposited copper on sapphire in atmospheres of air and argon yield that laser-enhanced adhesion of copper to sapphire is mediated by an intermediate compound. The laser bonding of other metallic materials to ceramics are presented.
