Examined the literature on the acquisition of language after 4 yr. of age with emphasis on important developmental changes that occur after the earlier dramatic initiation of language behavior. At all levels significant advances in language were found. The evidence is interpreted as indicating that phonological, syntactic, and semantic levels of analysis are intimately interrelated and that language advances appear to be correlated with developmental periods of cognitive advance.
