Abstract

We have observed the ability of observers to locate signals embedded in white noise and other nonwhite and nonstationary images. Performance was found to be consistent with that predicted by a cross correlator that takes into account the variability of the background image (normalization) and that assumes a degree of uncertainty as to the precise location of the signal.
