Abstract
A review is given of recent research on amorphous, compositionally modulated rare earth-transition metal films. Factors determining their magnetic structure, perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and magneto-optic properties are discussed. Thin films of rare earth-transition metal compounds which have strong permanent magnet properties are outlined. Many of the new complex compounds have been prepared as thin films with controlled anisotropies. Possible applications of such films are briefly discussed.
