Abstract
In this work we review the phenomenology and details of the electromagnetic theory of the polar Kerr effect in thin magnetic films. We present example applications of this theory to thin compositionally modulated rare earth transition metal magnetic layers incorporated into various multilayer structures involving both magnetic and nonmagnetic materials.
