The data analyzed in this project were part of a larger longitudinal study of Brazilian families being conducted by the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul/BR and partially sponsored by Brigham Young University/USA. The families in the study lived in Vila Jardim, in the city of Porto Alegre, and were selected in a conjoint effort of three units of the Division of Community Health of Grupo Hospitalar Conceicao. According to the official distribution of public medical services in Brazil, families living in Vila Jardim are assigned to one of the units of Grupo Hospitalar Conceicao when medical services are needed. Birth records of all infants born between November 1998 and December 1999 in the selected area were identified by researchers for inclusion in the study. A medical student obtained identification data and invited each family to be interviewed. Of the total number of families selected, 64 families did not participate in the study. Overall, 153 families participated in the first wave of data collection, representing a 76.9% response rate. T-tests were run to test the demographic similarity of the participants who reported their demographic data and the participants who actually completed the study. Results showed no evidence of sample selection bias.

This study examined common marital problems faced by Brazilian couples. The sample consisted of 80 married couples living in Porto Alegre, Brazil. Results showed that money, children, jealousy, and sex were common problems faced by Brazilian couples. There were few gender differences found. Sex and alcohol had a significant impact on marital satisfaction of wives, and sex had a significant impact on marital satisfaction of husbands.
