Subsequently, the World Summit for Children, with more than 150 countries participating, met in 1990 and adopted a plan of action with the goal of a 50% reduction in maternal mortality rates by 2000. The World Heath Organization declared 1998 the Year of Safe Motherhood. The Save the Mothers Fund was established by the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) in 1997.
