Abstract
Glaucoma, one of the leading causes of blindness worldwide, is characterized by gradual and progressive damage to the optic nerve. The portion of the optic nerve clinically visible on examination is referred to as the optic nerve head (ONH), which is exposed to both intraocular pressure and intracranial pressure. The biomechanical environment of the ONH has been correlated with the development of glaucoma. This review summarizes the material characterizations of major components in ONH and elucidates the role of aging, treatment, and testing approaches on the mechanical behaviors.
