Abstract

The number of publications related to metagenomics has been exponentially growing since the availability of next-generation sequencing technologies. We will focus on the impacts of metagenomics on our understanding of prokaryotes composed of bacteria and archaea. This brush-stroke overview provides examples of successful strategies that are employed based on the depth of data acquisition and sample diversity used. In addition, we will discuss some of the advancements that are required to further our leap regarding the understanding of the microbiomes. The task at hand is to unveil the mechanisms of interconnections within a microbiome, as well as between the microbiomes and their environment including the human host.
