Metal removal and surface finish characteristics in abrasive flow machining.

Abstract

Abrasive Flow Machine (AFM) is a non-traditional finishing process that provides consistent results. This paper analyses the effects of several machining parameters on key performance measures. Media viscosity and extrusion pressure were both found to have a statistically significant effect on metal removal and surface finish. Workpiece material was also found to be a deciding factor in the amount of metal removal. An aluminium specimen had almost 10 times the material removed as compared to two steels. Increasing the media flow rate, while holding volume constant, did not affect stock removal. Scanning Electron Microscopic (SEM) studies revealed that the major improvement in surface finish takes place during the first few cycles. Surface roughness profiles have been modelled and analysed by Data Dependent Systems (DDS). The Green's function or impulse response function of the DDS models and the wavelength decomposition provide a detailed surface characterization and a better understanding of the surface generating mechanism.
