Abstract

The goals of intensive nutritional support for children awaiting liver transplantation are to make those patients grow sufficiently to match with available donor organs before death from liver failure occurs, and to make them strong enough to withstand this surgery once it is performed. These goals are accomplished by providing both adequate calories and protein. To further enhance the quality of life of these patients before as well as after transplantation, specific vitamin and mineral deficiencies should also be identified and vigorously treated. Nutritional support of the child with biliary atresia is often difficult, and requires frequent monitoring and attention to details. Nevertheless, the long-term survival of this disorder provided by liver transplant makes their care a rewarding experience.
