Abstract

Expression of a plant Δ6-palmitoyl (16:0)-acyl carrier protein desaturase in Escherichia coli resulted in the accumulation of the novel monounsaturated fatty acids Δ6-hexadecenoic acid (16:1Δ6) and Δ8- octadecenoic acid. Amounts of 16:1Δ6 accumulated by E. coli were increased more than twofold by the expression of a plant ferredoxin together with the Δ6-16:0-acyl carrier protein desaturase.
