Abstract

A version of the 7B8B binary line code is introduced. Because of its basic properties, i.e. minimum disparity and memoryless implementation, it is called the MDM-7B8B code. This code satisfies all key conditions for line codes. Since its usage for transmission requires less than 15% increase of transmission speed, it is recommended for large or very large capacity optical transmission systems. Transmission performances for this and other codes are presented and discussed.
