The development of the NMN occurred over time in six stages. First, the NMN, an Internet-based social support intervention, was based on the YPP model (Hudson et al., 1999). The YPP, a dedicated computer network, was created by maternity and pediatric nursing faculty at a Midwestern university to provide health information and social support to adolescent mothers. Orem’s (1991) Self-Care Deficit Nursing Theory provided the theoretical basis for the YPP because researchers conceptualized that health information and social support enhanced adolescent mothers’ self-care activities by promoting their own health and, consequently, that of their infants. The YPP consisted of an electronic library containing health and parenting information as well as electronic mail (e-mail) access to APNs and other mothers in the study. The YPP was funded by a University of Nebraska Medical Seed Grant and a Nebraska State Systems Development Initiative Grant. Research team members and two graduate nursing students enrolled in a research course developed the information content for the YPP about infant care; infant growth and development; infant health; postpartum physical and psychological care; and community resources. A computer technologist employed by the nursing college formatted the information content using Front PageTM, a publishing program, for the web site on the university Intranet server. Out-of-date computers donated by the nursing college were refurbished, and modems were purchased with grant funds. The computer and modem were brought by research investigators to 21 adolescent mothers’ homes within two weeks after the infant’s birth, and remained for the one year term of the study. Mothers logged on to the YPP web site and retrieved information in the electronic library about health and parenting information. Participants were provided E-mail accounts, allowing them to communicate with each other and with APNs, thereby enhancing their social support and knowledge about health and parenting. Data from the YPP were analyzed, and the intervention was evaluated.

N2 - Many single, low-income, African American mothers lack social support, experience psychological distress, and encounter difficulties caring for their infants during the transition to parenthood. The purpose of this article is to describe the development of a theoretically-based social support Internet intervention, the New Mothers Network, for improving single, low-income, African American mothers' health and parenting abilities. Conceptual and practical information is provided to describe the evolution of the intervention. The development of the New Mothers Network is described in six stages. The New Mothers Network may be an effective social support nursing intervention for improving single, low-income, African American mothers' psychological health outcomes, parenting outcomes, and health care utilization outcomes.
