Abstract

An approach for reducing the effect of quantization noise is proposed that uses the residual redundancy in the ouput of an n-bit differential pulse-code modulation (DPCM) system to mimic an n plus 1-bit DPCM system. It involves developing a lookup table indexed by the past and present n-bit quantizer outputs to obtain the most probable n plus 1-bit quantizer output. The technique is simple to implement and provides consistent improvement over standard DPCM systems.
