N2 - The features of a research program which was developed to investigate the effects of longitudinal electric and magnetic fields on photoelectrons accelerated by relativistic laser fields at the focus of multi-Terrwatt lasers are discussed. It was observed that the transversal-field-based equation underestimates experimental polar angles. The pondormotive force concept breaks down, and the role played by these fields in the motion of the relativistic photoelectrons was attenuated due to a Doppler shift of the laser wave in the electron reference frame. The relative effect of considering longitudinal field components in calculations is to slow relativistic electrons down.
