Abstract

Some of the proposed and current clinical uses of otoacoustic emissions are reviewed in this paper. Although infant screening is discussed, the primary focus is on those implementations of otoacoustic emissions targeted toward an adult population. The greatest potential, in addition to screening, is found in the use of otoacoustic emissions as part of a diagnostic battery to localize pathology unique to the cochlea and to monitor ototoxicity during certain drug regimens. Several other less established potential uses are also discussed.
