Abstract

In cells mutant for the rpoS gene coding the σs subunit of RNA polymerase, synthesis of antibiotic microcin C51, which is produced by Escherichia coli, is absent or extremely reduced. In experiments with a cloned promoter of the microcin operon, the σs subunit was shown to participate in regulation of transcription of plasmid genes that determine microcin synthesis.
