Abstract
We have prepared polypyrrole-zeolite systems by oxidative polymerization over small SnO2 particles and oxygen-covered Pd clusters supported in KL zeolite. The local structure of the Pd and SnO2 clusters was studied by means of extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS). Electron spin resonance (ESR) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopies and solvent extraction techniques were used to characterize the polymeric species in the zeolite cavities. A monomer/oxidant ratio larger than stoichiometric appears to indicate that the oxidation reaction may proceed catalytically after air exposure rather than in a redox fashion.
