Abstract

To screen for clinically occult pulmonary infections and to determine whether altered lower respiratory tract inflammation was associated with postoperative pulmonary complications, flexible fiberoptic bronchoscopy and bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) were performed on all of the adult (and one minor) liver transplant recipients during the beginning of their surgery, and these patients were followed prospectively for the development of postoperative pulmonary complications.
