Abstract
Elderly persons are at risk of the same sexually transmitted viral diseases as are younger persons. However, in elderly patients these illnesses may produce greater morbidity than they would in younger persons. At the same time, management of disease in older persons often calls for greater vigilance because of naturally diminished physiologic reserves and metabolic processes. While major strides have been made in recent years in the treatment of patients with viral diseases, including those commonly transmitted sexually, the same constraints that have always governed the management of disease in older persons must still be recognized and taken into account.
