N2 - The estimation of surface damage due to rough machining is important for the selection of proper machining parameters of the subsequent semi-finish and finish machining operations in Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM). Hence, various factors of surface integrity of electro-discharge machined components have been experimentally studied by many researchers leading to some useful guidelines. This paper discusses the possibility of a single measure of surface damage based on the comparison of different measures (such as residual stresses, microcracks, diffusion of carbon, and microhardness) of surface integrity. Experimental measurements of microhardness of D2 tool steel and damaged layer thickness results for D2 tool steel and cemented carbides are presented for verification.
