Abstract

Nontraditional machining processes (such as Electrode Discharge Machining, Electrochemical Machining, Laser Beam Machining, etc.) are increasingly being used to produce complex parts of superalloys, ceramics, plastics, fiber reinforced composites, wood, and textiles in a variety of applications throughout the aerospace, automobile, and electronic industries. Over the past twenty years many technological developments and research attempts have been made world wide to enhance the application potential and knowledge base of Electrodischarge (EDM) and Electrochemical (ECM) machining processes. This paper presents a brief review of recent developments in research and technology of EDM and ECM. The specific issues related to process mechanism, surface integrity, tool design, and control of EDM and ECM are addressed.
