Abstract

This chapter provides an overview of American foreign policy in the Arctic, calling attention to the geopolitical, economic and environmental implications of the effects of global warming. As the race starts for oil- and resource-rich waters and shipping lanes, there is growing recognition of the significance of the Arctic and the need for Washington to secure its national-security and economic interests. By examining current and potential challenges, this chapter recommends developing a comprehensive strategy to protect U.S. security, promote sustainable economic development and foster global cooperation and respect for international norms.
