Abstract
To reduce the risk of hemorrhagic complications, we have exclusively used hemodialysis without the use of heparin (either regional or systemic). This paper summarizes our experience with the use of nonheparinized hemodialysis (NHHD). Our results indicate that this technique is safe and effective for patients with renal failure after OLT. In addition, the procedure has also proved useful in supporting a number of patients at our center with renal failure pre-OLT. Not only does the technique allow these patients to be supported until a suitable donor liver is located but also allows them to be dialyzed immediately pre-OLT without the added risk worsening their coagulopathy with heparin.
