Abstract

This chapter includes brief descriptions of the history of the development of translational animal models that have been utilized in regenerative medicine research with observations on the strengths and weaknesses of each model. Some examples of the successful or unsuccessful applications of small (mouse and rat), moderate-sized (rabbit and guinea pig) and large (pig, dog, rhesus monkey, chimpanzee, baboon) animals are presented. The models and their applications are described together with an assessment of the status of their translation to humans. An attempt is made to identify key unanswered questions that need to be addressed in order to move each area toward a regenerative medicine application in humans.
