Abstract
Total knee replacement (TKR) is in the era of “mass users” and virtually all-current TKR designs use UHMWPE as a bearing component. With rising demand for TKR from a significant part of the ageing population, more manufacturers and more types of prostheses have emerged, and the number of surgeons who carry out TKR and revision operations is increasing too. Testing of such variety of implants poses a challenge as it needs to be standardized to help the industrial design process and to help the regulatory bodies (e.g., FDA in the USA and CE in Europe) in the screening of implants prior to clinical use.
