Abstract

Ultrasound in rheumatology (RhUS) is increasingly incorporated into the diagnosis and management of rheumatic diseases of adults and children. This chapter reviews the technical aspects of RhUS, including physics, machine settings, and artifacts. Examination technique and imaging conventions are reviewed. The use of RhUS in rheumatic diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, crystalline arthropathy, spondyloarthropathy, and polymyalgia rheumatica is discussed. RhUS is increasingly used in vasculitis, Sjögren’s syndrome, and sclerosing diseases. Finally, RhUS procedural techniques are also reviewed.
