Abstract
Food, energy, and water need to be considered in a nexus context for food security into the future. There is a deep connection among these three parameters; scarcity of water or energy ultimately affects food production. However, alternative water and energy sources must be exploited so that abrupt disruptions in food systems do not affect the growing population. Although solar pumps are becoming increasingly affordable and popular in developing countries, there must be local controls on unregulated pumping because of aquifer depletions, and ultimately diminishing surface water, and hence the hydrologic cycle. Countries need to prioritize polities and interventions to overcome water constraints in agriculture while ensuring efficient, sustainable and equitable access to water. Addressing these challenges would require a re-imagination of the agricultural sector with regards to water and energy policies.
