Abstract

A benchmark commercial proton exchange membrane (PEM) is Nafion®, developed by DuPont Company. However, poor mechanical properties and the drastic decrease of proton conductivity at high temperature (>80°C) restricted its application under fuel cell operation conditions. Further, the high cost and the high methanol permeability spur the need of developing novel PEM materials. Recent research of McGrath group focused on the development of novel multiblock copolymers as one promising PEM through controlling the block lengths. Two series of multiblock copolymers have been synthesized based on the coupling reaction of a hexafluorobenzene(HFB) end capped unsulfonated poly(arylene ether sulfone) (BPS0) or fluorine terminated poly(arylene ether ketone) (6FK) hydrophobic oligomer and a phenoxide terminated disulfonated poly(arylene ether sulfone) (BPSH) hydrophilic oligomer.
